About us

Who We Are

We are a holding enterprise (Diatom Consultancy and Diatom Blue Tech) made up of marine scientists and independent entrepreneurs with extensive experience in bringing marine science into the core of the businesses and its decision-making processes.

We are experts in measuring, reporting and verifying (MRV) impacts on marine biodiversity (e.g. to demonstrate net positive impact or positive biodiversity outcomes).

Diatom Blue Tech and Diatom Consultancy are led by Alexandre Campos (Founder and Managing Director) who works with his two core partners: Rodrigo Campos (Marine Data and Statistic Modelling Partner) and Mauro Rebelo (Environmental DNA Partner).

The core team assembles other experts in line with each project's needs. Diatom's extended team counts oceanographers, marine remote sensing and GIS specialists, marine bio-acoustics experts, software developers and coastal marine resource management professionals, amongst others.

What we do

We are like-minded people. You can describe us as:

As entrepreneurs we have an optimistic interpretation of adverse events and we see problems as potential opportunities, becoming highly resilient, resourceful, and solution-oriented even within highly uncertain, resource-constrained environments; We believe in our ability to succeed and influence their own outcomes, empowering ourselves to take ownership of our lives.

We integrate the social (e.g. local communities)  and various internal and external stakeholders perspectives in everything we do.

We are passionate about solving complex problems, to bringing simplicity to businesses processes and clarity to stakeholders. We have a humanistic outlook, being other-focused and understanding that one creates value by looking to solve problems for others.

We are out of the box thinkers; we like to look at things with different perspectives; we value creativity, and we are tuned to new environmental technologies.

Scientific thinking is what drives our work. We are not driven by ideologies. We think independently in a search of a perspective that is close as possible to the reality. We change our perspective as we learn.

We're hiring!

Fabio C. Xavier, PhD
CTO - Monitoring Technologies, AI and Software Development Team Lead

Fabio Contrera Xavier is a seasoned marine bioacoustics expert with extensive experience in data analysis, modeling, and the development of machine learning applications. Holding a PhD in Marine Biotechnology and an MSc in Ocean Engineering, he has significantly contributed to the field through his roles at the IEAPM - Brasil.

Fabio's work involves developing detection, identification, and classification systems for biological sounds, creating marine soundscape models, and conducting marine acoustic monitoring.

He has also developed biotechnological applications leveraging bioacoustics and image processing and has published notable papers in the ICES Journal of Marine Science. His technical skills include proficiency in Python, R, SQL, and various ML/DL frameworks, underpinning his research and teaching endeavors.

Alexia Lessa
Marine Biologist and Fish Ecology Lead

Alexia A. Lessa is a PhD student in Ecology at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, specializing in marine bioacoustics and the ecological impacts of anthropogenic noise. Her research focuses on the acoustical behavior of reef fish, particularly damselfishes, and how human-made noise affects their anti-predator responses and overall behavior. With a Master’s in Marine Biotechnology from the IEAPM - Brazil, she has conducted significant studies on the impacts of anthropogenic noise on reef fish.
Alexia has published research on the use of acoustic methods for environmental monitoring and has been actively involved in various marine conservation projects and scientific expeditions, showcasing her expertise in marine ecology and bioacoustics. Her technical skills include proficiency in Python, R, and acoustic analysis software, and she has received recognition for her contributions to marine ecology through awards and grants.
